We can do this without governments – and will. We can’t do it without you.
PARI is changing the way Indian journalism reports and documents rural India.
India is more than the elite of a few metros and towns. At PARI we bring news and information about the rest of this vast country. We are looking at rural lives and livelihoods, languages, communities, migrants and more. We need your help to pull off this most ambitious of Indian journalistic endeavours.

Frequently Asked Questions
PARI – People’s Archive of Rural India – is both a living journal and an online archive to record and bring to national focus the labour, livelihoods, languages, art, crafts, histories and diverse cultures of rural Indians. P. Sainath founded PARI in December 2014. It is run by the CounterMedia Trust (CMT) formed in September 2011.
We are a non-profit organisation. We publish under creative commons, and do not charge readers or put-up advertisements. We charge no subscription fee; nothing is behind a paywall and we are completely free-to-access by anyone. We guard our independence and receive no direct grants from governments and corporations, nor any funding that could dictate our content. So, we are dependent on volunteer labour, donations from individuals, foundations and institutions that see value in independent and free media.
Every PARI story, photograph and film comes from the field, not from opinion writers at desktops. This often involves travel across great distances, and time spent in rural India. Every piece is a multimedia digital production. Beyond the author's own work, bringing it all together is a lot of labour by text, photo and video editors. When you give us recurring monthly donations, it helps stabilise our income.
You may donate to PARI here. You can also send your donations via cheque, payable to CounterMedia Trust. Our address is: 27/43 Sagar Sangam, Bandra Reclamation, Bandra West, Mumbai 400050.
Please make sure you mention the following information along with the cheque: Full name, PAN card number, email address, contact number and postal address.
Since we depend on donations from the public, every bit helps. Even donations as modest as Rs. 100-200 a month. That said, we do not impose Rs. 200 as a standard. You are welcome to – and we hope you will – contribute much higher sums to PARI if you are able to.
PARI can accept donations only from Indian citizens and entities. Any contribution must be in Indian Rupees, from an Indian bank account, and accompanied by the donor’s PAN number, address and Email ID. We are currently not registered with FCRA for accepting foreign funds.
Please make sure you include your email address in the donation form when you make a contribution to PARI. A receipt will be sent to you in 4-8 weeks by email. You may view the 80G certificate here.
This is mandated by the Government of India in order to issue a donation receipt.
All donations to PARI are exempt from tax under 80G of the Income Tax Act. To receive your donation receipt, please make sure you send us your email and PAN details along with the donation.
You can donate equipment such as desktops, laptops, cameras, headphones, sound recorders and more, as well as relevant software to be used by our team, PARI Fellows and rural contributors.
